Verizon user interface uses those top and bottom bars for the menus and icons, so the whole resolution is not available for the whole wallpaper.
You may have to subtract some verticle pixels (not sure exactly how many) from your original pictures, otherwise it automatically resizes it to fit the vertical size, which leaves blank spaces for the hortizontal size.
