Default Sprint Nextel to offer pay-per-view movies

Sep 5, 2006
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.—Sprint Nextel Corp. launched a branded, pay-per-view movie service that offers nearly four dozen classic films and recent releases. Sprint Movies, which is powered by mSpot, allows users to watch films in their entirety or view chapters that can be watched over time. The films cost between $4 and $6 each, and subscribers can view offerings an unlimited number of times during periods that range between 24 hours and one week, depending on the title.
The carrier said it plans to continue to offer its mSpot Movies service, which debuted in December and allows customers to watch unlimited movies, TV programs and concerts for a $7 monthly subscription. The new service features more high-profile films, however, including classics “Animal House,” “Scarface” and “Slapshot” and more recent hits including “Happy Gilmore” and “American Pie.” The carrier noted that all movies are edited to TV 14 standards.
The announcement marks the second time in less than a week Sprint Nextel has expanded on mSpot-powered services and rebranding offerings as its own. The operator last week unveiled Sprint Radio, an mSpot-powered streaming music services that features more than 50 channels of content. Sprint Nextel has offered mSpot Radio since April 2005.
