Using Stereo earbuds with Voyager for Music

I bought a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter so I could used my high end stereo only earbuds listening to mp3 music on my Voyager as a stand alone mp3 player. To my chagrin it didn't work and the phone reset every time I plugged this setup in the phone jack. Are you not able to do this as I was told you can? Do you need a corded or bluetooth stereo headset specifically for cell phones just to listen to music on this unit?

When I plugged in the adapter and the headphones the music still played through the phone speakers and was crackly and didn't soung like stereo. Is this a phone issue or a headphone issue?

I don't want to fry my phone so anyone have any answers here?
