Can I use stereo earbuds for music on Voyager?

I bought a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter thinking I could use my high end earbuds to listen to mp3's on my LG Voyager VX10000 for music only but it didn't work. The sound still came out of the Voyager speakers and sounded like crackling mono. After I plugged in this setup to the headphone jack on the Voyager my phone kept resetting me to the entry login screen kicking me out of music mode. Can anyone tell me is this setup going to work or must I get a corded stereo cell phone headset instead. I was told by the salesman this should work. A regular stereo headset is a 3 wire connection while a cell phone headset with mic is a 4 wire jack.
