Default Tethering phone to laptop.....question

After reading various guides i am able to get my phone tethered to laptop via USB cable or Bluetooth DUN, using this guide.

How to enable EVDO DUN on ANY EVDO capable phone in 10 easy steps!

first time i connected to the internet i noticed it connected as a data call. Not wanting to have to pay the 2.00 per MB verizon charges for data usage i looked int the subject further.

As i researched the subject i came across various guides/posts stating that if you use EV-DO then it is considered DATA usage(what i want to avoid).
So i researched how to disable EV-DO, and successfully did so using these guides:

http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/ve...moto-w755.html

and

http://hacktherazr.com/guides/verizo...erizon-v3c-v3m

Researching the subject in various posts/guides some people state that EV-DO is considered DATA usage, BUT 1X only takes airtime minutes. So as i stated earlier I disabled EV-DO and connected to the internet via my teathered w755 again in 1x.

SO my question is....
when i am connected to the internet on a PC via tethering on the 1x network , is this considered DATA usage or minute usage. I could never seem to find a clear answer. Also, if it is indeed considered minute usage then i would assume that it is free after 7pm(?or9pm?)on weekdays and on weekends.

Also if connecting to the 1x network is still considered data useage, then i assume there is no need to disable EV-DO, Sans to save battery life.

I just signed up with verizon a month ago, so i am still new to all this stuff, but i am learning.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer on how this tethering loophole works now? I think all the information about PC tethering i read was obsolete. I assume now that regardless of what network you connect to (1X/EV-DO)it all counts all DATA usage.

Any further enlightenment on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have LG VX8600 with no data plan and I'm able to tether my laptop to the network at EV-DO speed. And I've never been charged for the data and on my bill, it shows up as a voice call to the number I called to connect.

What I don't know is whether Verizon would be happy about it if they found out, so you still have to be careful. I don't use it most of the time and only in emergency like when I'm in the airport or something.

i have no data plan also, i think. I have pay per MB. Standard voice calling plan, the 39.99 one.

so i take it you call #777. with yourphone#@vzw3g.com as the username and verizon as the password. Also do you connect with EV-DO or 1x? Just trying to clarify "I'm able to tether my laptop to the network at EV-DO speed".

I looked at my usage on verizonwireless.com and there is DATA usage there. Not much but it is there, I only connected and browsed a few pages. But my Voice Usage is not updated yet, so i can't determine what it is yet. I think it is DATA.

Could it be that the tethered motow755 connection only connects to data usage?

Question. when you do your tethering is it also a data call for you?

Thanks

And yes, i know this is not condoned by verizon. But if my device can do something useful then it should do it.

I haven't used this for a while so I'll have to go back and look at my old statements but I've never paid for any data charge and it was only counted as voice minutes.

I can't say for certain that will be the case with Motorola W755.

this is odd. I viewed my online statement again. And the data usage that was there from the tethering is no longer there on my usage, but there is also no voice call usage recorded. Strange.

another question....

when you tether do you use EV-DO or 1x network.

If in fact EV-DO connection does count as minutes to then i will have to re enable EV-DO.

Thanks four your replies.

Definitely EVDO. And it's pretty decent speed. The screen changes to show Tx and Rx bars.

Thanks. As i said earlier i 've only had this phone and verizon as my service provider for almost one month now. Everything that i've learned to do has been from just google searching basically.

If i am able to help some one then i would be happy to.

anyway....after a few days i checked my usage online again(havn't even got a statement from verizon yet cause i only been with them for about 25 days now) and it appears that when i did tether to my laptop and connected (data call) it was indeed considered data usage.

Now i spoke to verizon about getting unlimited data on my plan. I never mentioned that i was planning to tether my phone to my laptop. First they tried to sell me the $60 5GB a month data plan, I told them that was not what i wanted ($60 a month for 5gb...please)
I then asked about the $5 dollar a month Mobile Web. They said that was just the charge to use their mobile web and that the 1.99 per MB still obtained to that. So 5 dollars a month to use their sub-par mobile web 2.0 app PLUS 1.99 per MB for DATA transfer.....no Thanks).
Then they tried to sell me the Vcast pack for $15 a month, which is probably what i need to get to do my tethering. The email which i received stated "our VCast VPak provides Unlimited data browsing among other benefits...." sounds like the way to go.

From the numerous posts/guides i have read it sounded like i could get away with tethering by just using my minutes...it appears that this is not the case any longer, regardless if you connect to EV-DO or 1x network...at least as the w755 is concerned, any tethering is connected as a data call now...i assume, as that is what is reflected in my usage.

Please if there is anyone with a moto w755 that tethers to their PC, please let me know what your results were with it. Was it a minutes airtime charge or (as i suspect)DATA usage?

Also if some one can confirm that the vcast pack truly support "unlimited" data (to an acceptable extent).

Anyone that can provide information about tethering with their moto w755 would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
