Default How to Use Guide: Visual Voice Mail

Visual Voice Mail is an enhanced voice mail application that allows subscribers to view and play incoming voice mail messages in any order on their wireless device.

Incoming voice mail messages display the caller’s number, the day, date, and time the message was received, and the message length. If the sender is in your contact list, the sender’s name (instead of the number) and the type of device that generated the incoming voice mail message will be displayed as well.

Getting Started
If you are a new Verizon Wireless customer (or have not set up your Verizon Wireless Voice Mail service) first you’ll have to activate the service and set up your Voice Mail password, greetings and mailbox. Instructions for setting up your Verizon Wireless Voice Mail service can be found in the Verizon Wireless Welcome Guide that came with your phone or search voice mail at Verizon Wireless.

Activating Visual Voice Mail
  1. Begin by downloading the Visual Voice Mail application. Activate Visual Voice Mail by selecting the Visual Voice Mail link or icon.
  2. After selecting the Visual Voice Mail link, a message will provide more information about the application.
  3. You will be asked to download the application and begin the subscription process.
  4. After you have downloaded the application, Visual Voice Mail will ask you to launch it.
  5. You will be prompted to enter your PIN. Visual Voice Mail uses the same password as your standard Voice Mail system.
  6. Once Visual Voice Mail has launched, it will ask you if you want to subscribe. Press Yes.
  7. You will be shown the service and subscription information. (Press More for additional information.)
  8. Choose Subscribe.
  9. You’ll be asked to accept the Terms and Conditions, select I Accept.
  10. Visual Voice Mail will instruct you to wait five minutes before re-launching the application.
  11. Press Close.
NOTES:
  • Although the Visual Voice Mail application is free, unless you subscribe to a plan or feature that includes unlimited airtime or data usage, you will be billed usage charges when you download or upgrade the application and when you use certain features. Additionally, you will be charged $2.99 per month, per line subscription fee.
  • Once you enter your PIN through Visual Voice Mail it is stored within the application and is only required when you change your password. This means that anyone in possession of your handset can access your voice mail messages that are stored on your handset.
Launching Visual Voice Mail
Launch Visual Voice Mail from the Messaging screen. The Inbox will be displayed.

Note: Visual Voice Mail prompts you to enter a password the first time you log in and whenever you change the password.

Using Visual Voice Mail
The Visual Voice Mail Inbox lists your messages and displays a New Message icon when you receive a new voice mail message.

Details of each message in the Inbox include:
  • Number or contact name of the caller.
  • Day, date, and time the message was received
  • Length of the message
  • If the message is expiring
From the Inbox, you can:
  • Play, Pause, Fast Forward, and Rewind a selected message.
  • Erase the selected message.
  • Select other actions from the Options menu.
Note: Depending on the model of your phone, Visual Voice Mail controls are activated using soft keys, a touch screen, or a combination of both. Consult your phone’s manual for more information on navigating through Verizon Wireless applications.

Listening to Your Voice Mail Messages
Visual Voice Mail allows you to play a selected message in your Inbox. Scroll up or down to select the message you would like to play. This differs from traditional Voice Mail access where you have to listen to your messages in the order in which they were received.

Press Play to listen to the selected message. You can Pause, Resume Play, Fast Forward, or Rewind the message. The counter will indicate how much of the message has played and the length of the message.

Note: Fast forward and rewind work in five second increments. If the message is five seconds or less in length, fast forward will skip to the end of the message and rewind will restart it. Selecting a different message while you are listening to a message will cause the message to stop playing.

Erasing a Voice Mail Message
  1. Select a message in the Inbox and press Erase.
  2. Visual Voice Mail will ask if you want to erase the message.
  3. Select Yes and click OK.
  4. Visual Voice Mail will delete the message and return to the Inbox.

Inbox Options Menu

Visual Voice Mail’s other features are accessed through the Options menu.

Options include:
  • Callback
  • Archive
  • Reply
  • Compose Voice Mail
  • Forward
  • Check New Messages
  • Add to Contacts
  • Preferences
The Options menu will display only those options available for the selected message. For example:
  • If the message came from a contact in your address book or contact list, the Add to Contacts option is not displayed.
  • Forward is not available for messages marked Private by the sender.
  • Reply is not available for international numbers or calls from Caller ID blocked phones.
  • Select a message and press Options.
Select an option and press OK or press the option’s number on your phone's key pad.

Note: Only Verizon Wireless Customers can receive voice mail messages sent using the Reply, Forward, and Compose Voice Mail options.

Optional services may require additional fees such as airtime, roaming or messaging.

Common Wireless Events

Traditional Voice Mail is still available when you subscribe to Visual Voice Mail. Just dial *86 to access the Voice Mail system and play your messages.

Changing your Password
Dial *86 to access the Voice Mail system and follow the prompts to change your password. The next time you launch Visual Voice Mail, you will be asked to enter your new password.

NOTE: Once you enter your PIN through Visual Voice Mail it is stored within the application. This means that anyone in possession of your handset can access your voice mail messages that are stored on you handset.

Airplane/Stand Alone Mode
When in Airplane/ Stand Alone Mode, Visual Voice Mail can:
  • Play messages already loaded to your phone,
  • Archive the messages on your phone.

  • Erase messages.
  • Clear your message counter.
However, you cannot send or retrieve messages while the device is in Airplane/ Stand Alone mode.

If you answer the call while recording an outgoing message, you may need to re-record your message.

Visual Voice Mail Alerts
Visual Voice Mail alerts you to new Voice Mail messages and PIN changes whether or not the application is running. New Messages When you receive a new message, you may:
  • View Now — Opens the Visual Voice Mail Inbox.

  • View Later — Closes the alert screen.
  • Dial *86 — Accesses standard Voice Mail.
Note: If you receive a new message while using Visual Voice Mail, a New Messages icon appears at the top right of the Inbox. Use the Check New Messages option to retrieve it.

PIN Change
After you change your PIN using *86, Visual Voice Mail will alert you that your Visual Voice Mail PIN is out of sync with your traditional Voice Mail account. If you receive this message when you are launching Visual Voice Mail, you may:
  • Set Now — Opens the Visual Voice Mail Inbox and asks you to re-enter your PIN.
  • Set Later — Closes the alert screen.
  • Dial *86 — Accesses standard Voice Mail.
If your PIN is changed while Visual Voice Mail is active, you will be asked to close the application and log in again.

Visual Voice Mail Warnings
Visual Voice Mail warns you about Voice Mail system and application events.

You Have Expiring Messages
Visual Voice Mail holds messages in the Inbox until they are designated for deletion by the Voice Mail system. To retain messages, use the Archive option to save them to your phone or memory card. (You may also restart the expiration counter by exiting Visual Voice Mail and dialing *86. Listen to the message and press 9 to save the message.)

Upgrade Required/Available
Visual Voice Mail informs you if a new version of the application is available when you launch Visual Voice Mail. If an upgrade is required, you will not be able to log in until you download the upgrade and Visual Voice Mail will offer you an opportunity to download the required upgrade each time you launch the application. If the upgrade is optional you may choose to download the upgrade at a later time by using Check for Update in the Preferences Options.

Delivery Failed to Recipients
If the voice mail server does not send your Forwarded or Composed Visual Voice Mail message to a recipient (for example, if the recipient does not have a Verizon Wireless telephone number), you will receive a Delivery Failed to Recipient(s) alert or a Delivery Status Notice (DSN).
  1. If you receive an alert, Visual Voice Mail will then display a list of the recipient(s) that did not receive your message.

  2. You can clear or correct the phone number(s) or try and resend and press OK to return to the Forward or Compose Voice Mail screens.

  3. From there you can Send the original message, Review your message and select Options to change the Priority or Sensitivity of the message.

If you receive the DSN, that indicates a system generated message by the Voice Mail system denoting that your message could not be delivered to a desired recipient.

Messages that Cannot be Played through Visual Voice
Mail Faxes and certain system messages cannot be played through the Visual Voice Mail application.
  1. These messages are identified with a label in the Inbox.

  2. When you press play Visual Voice Mail instructs you to dial *86 to access the message.

Quick Tips:

Inbox Label
Error Message
FAX FAX Message Undelivered Delivery Status Notice Received Return Receipt System Notification System Notification Unknown Unknown Message Type

Canceling Visual Voice Mail Service
Visual Voice Mail cannot be canceled through the application.
  • To cancel the Visual Voice Mail service, call Customer Service at *611, go to MyVerizon or My Business Account at Verizon Wireless.
  • When you cancel, you will have to choose Basic Voice Mail.
