In order to support VCAST (EV-DO) you have to use more expensive baseband chipset (MSM6500). If you don't need VCAST and just need the 1x data and some camera functions, you only need less expensive baseband chipset (MSM6100 or MSM6050). This one probably has MSM6100.

its good though with no vcast because alot of people want to keep their tri mode phones and also want bluetooth which since the v710 was phased out isn't possible. Now the the 870 plus the lg 5300 their are two choices.

That is right. The MSM6500 (EV-DO) chipsets do not support AMPS (analog) so it will not work in some remote places where there are no digital coverage. It doesn't effect majority of the people living in big cities, but only in very remote areas.

However, having the analog service can sometimes backfire as it will use a lot of battery and you don't even know it when you are in analog only area. The digital only phones will simply go to "sleep", while the analog enabled phone will try to stay up and wait for phone calls, but that uses up quite a lot of battery power to do so in analog mode.

right. The government wants to stop the production of tri mode phones because they want to use the analog band for the military so the availability of tri mode phones for any carrier should start becoming fewer and far between.
