In most cases, you can keep your old cell phone number when you switch to Verizon Wireless.

This is great, if you are using some other service and want to switch to Verizon. I started off with Verizon and don't have any plan to move to any other carrier.

I've been with Verizon since 2001 but before that I was with PacBell and I had to get a new number instead of keeping my old number.

This Number Portability was made available recently and wasn't an option in 2001. I may have kept the same number if I could've.
