Verizon Wireless refuses to sell Motorola Q to existing customers
June 18, 2006 [MS Smartphone]
Wireless carriers in most countries form oligopoly, where certain rather bad industry practices are imposed and at the end, the end users suffer. One of such practices is coercing subscribers into purchasing of 2 year long contracts, but the problem is that wholly new generations of phones are coming more often than that, and wireless carriers that don't understand it, are simply losing customers...
In other words, Motorola employees:
... may have very high ambitions about Motorola Q - they want to sell 3 million Motorola Q phones in short period of time - but unfortunately due to such industry practices like the one from Verizon this aim may never ever be achieved: existing Verizon Wireless subscribers are being denied ability to purchase Motorola Q on a contract, with lower price, and must wait till their existing 2-year long contract ends.
The only solution to this problem is always to buy phones at full price and to switch operators whenever one doesn't like them anymore, but practically speaking due to high unsubsidized prices, this may be unrealistic for some people.
Anyway: CDMA EVDO phones like the Motorola Q that is being sold now at Verizon Wireless is not SIM card based but must be activated by Verizon, so operator switching with this phone is practically impossible. For Motorola to achieve 3 million target, Motorola has to release GSM/UMTS version of the Motorola Q as soon as possible and offer it for sale without subscriptions too - as it is possible with Nokia smartphones already. Otherwise this 3 million sales target of Moto Q will never ever be achieved!
