PC Card FAQ
- The computer doesn’t detect my PC card – what should I do? There are several possible resolutions.
IssueResolutionPhysical connectivity- Make sure the card is fully inserted into the PC Card slot. Remove and reinsert if necessary.
- Try another PC Card slot on the computer (if available).
- Power down the computer and then remove the card. Next power the computer.
Drivers may not be installed or were installed incorrectly- The Drivers and Connection Software for the PC Card must be installed prior to inserting the card into the computer’s PC Card slot.
- If the PC Card was inserted before driver and software installation, unplug it, then remove the drivers through control panel > add/remove programs. Reboot the computer, then reinstall the drivers prior to re-inserting the PC Card.
Another application or device may be using the port- Verify that there are no applications running in the system tray that use the same COM port resources as the modem.
- If so, exit/close the application and retry. Example applications: HotSync, ActiveSync, FoneSync, Fax Controller, etc.
Windows Update or Service Pack issues- The computer should have the latest service pack and/or updates from Microsoft Windows Update.
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to determine if your system requires updating.
- My BroadbandAccess connection seems very slow; how can I improve it? There are several possible resolutions.
IssueResolutionYou may be in an area that only has NationalAccess coverageIf your PC Card has BroadbandAccess capabilities (EVDO) you will achieve Broadband speeds within the BroadbandAccess coverage area. When you travel into an area that does not offer Broadband services your card will seamlessly connect to the NationalAccess services (if available). When connected to NationalAccess your connection will not be the same speed and throughput as BroadbandAccess.
Software issue- Try exiting the Venturi application.
- Venturi is an optional software application that will improve connection speeds by taking the information you are requesting and compressing it down to a smaller size before it is sent to your computer.
- Sometimes this software is out-of-date or not compatible with certain computer configurations and can actually cause the connection to slow down or stop completely.
- You can exit the application by locating the letter “V” icon in the system tray (the small area of your taskbar where you see your clock).
- Right click on the letter “V” and select “exit” from the pop up menu.
- If this allows you to browse web pages, please contact WDTS at 866-788-9387 for further help with Venturi configuration and updating.
Signal strength- A poor signal on your mobile phone will contribute to slowing down your connection speed.
- If you are experiencing poor signal strength, try moving to a different location.
- Check to make sure your antenna is fully extended.
- Also refer to the Verizon Wireless National Enhanced Services area to determine the level of coverage in your current location.
- I was able to connect, but the error message “Page cannot be displayed” is displayed. What should I do? There are several possible resolutions.
IssueResolutionA firewall or Internet security software may be interfering- Try disabling your firewall temporarily for troubleshooting purposes. Sometimes a firewall or security application is not properly configured and changes must be made to the application to allow the mobile connection.
- If disabling the firewall or security application allows you to browse web pages, then contact the maker of the application for further configuration support. Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes a built-in firewall. You can disable this for trouble shooting purposes through the Control Panel > Windows Firewall.
Your Web Browser may not be configured properly- Your browser may be set to connect through a proxy or configured to use a specific connection other than the mobile connection.
- Check your Internet Settings under Control Panel > Internet Settings. Contact WDTS support at 866-788-9387 for further help on this portion of your Internet browser settings.

- Why am I getting these errors: “Data Link terminated by remote machine” or “PPP link control protocol was terminated by the remote computer”? These errors are usually caused by a data provisioning issue that must be corrected by a WDTS Technician. Please contact WDTS at 866-788-9387 for help if you encounter either of these error messages when trying to connect.
- Why can't I send email through my existing ISP mail account? Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) do not allow their customers to send email from other networks such as Verizon Wireless' NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess services. To accommodate Verizon Wireless customers who have email accounts that do not allow relaying, Verizon Wireless has implemented an outbound SMTP mail server for you to be able to send your email.
To utilize SMTP you will need to do the following:- Change your Outgoing Mail Server to smtp.vzwmail.net. The steps to change the Outgoing Mail Settings will vary by email client. Please refer to your email client provider for instructions on how to change the setting.
- Create a VText.com profile if you do not already have a Verizon Wireless VText.com profile. Visit www.vtext.com from your PC to register for free. A TXT Messaging capable data device or phone is required.
- The credentials to access the send mail server will be the 10-digit mobile number (used on VText.com) @vzwmail.net (i.e. 2025551212@vzwmail.net) for the user name. For the password use the password established on www.vtext.com.
- NOTE: Credentials established on www.vtext.com may take up to twelve hours before they will work on the Verizon Wireless SMTP server. If your password works on www.vtext.com but not on the smtp.vzwmail.net server, try again in a couple hours.
The Verizon Wireless SMTP server can be accessed from most ISPs (Internet Service Providers) eliminating the need to reconfigure settings when switching between Verizon Wireless and other networks.
